Climbing Mt Athabasca Norh Face Bypass

Tom Morin traversing high on Mt. Athabasca.

Had a really fun day on Mt. Athabasca last weekend (August 1st) with Tommy Morin. Left Canmore at 1:30 am (poor Tommy left Calgary at Midnight) and started climbing by 4. Perfect conditions made for fast travel up and down. By far the most impressive feat of the day was Tommy's driving prowess.

Below the Silverhorn (center) and the Ramp Route (right). The North Face Routes are out of sight on the lookers left.

Sunrise on the North Glacier.

A big pile of fresh debris below the North Face.

Climbing the ice face on the Bypass.

Tommy on the North Ridge

The ice gully below the final band of choss.

Climbing the ridge to the summit. When not covered in snow, this section presents easy but loooooose rock. Cool shadow on the glacier below.

The Summit Ridge. Mt. Columbia is the big peak in the distance. With snow coverage being as good as it is right now, I bet Columbia would still be a decent ski descent.

Tommy airing out his pits on the summit.
